the individual makes the whole

1 + 1 = 2 is a celebration of the individual and the collective, or to be more specific, the role of the individual in creating the whole. it is a response to oxjam’s desire to raise awareness of global warming and aims to demonstrate how, if each individual made one small change then the impact would be huge.

featuring both dance and photography negotiationofspace asked artists to create work in response to the equation 1 + 1 = 2. once given the brief artists were left to create on their own using their own cultures, experiences and artistic practices to influence their interpretation of the brief. each highly individual piece then comes together to form the whole.

hailing from as far as vancouver and new york this truly global group is linked to manchester through negotiationofspace and is a reflection of manchester’s cultural diversity, whilst simultaneously highlighting the city’s reach stretches further than it’s physical boundaries.
